Introduction

West Bengal with a population of nine crores is the India’s fourth-most populous state, and shares its borders with Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan. The maintenance of law and order and peace in the society is a herculean task due to the immigration of refugees, and communal tensions. The West Bengal Police was reorganized under the provisions of Police Act 1861 during the British Raj. The police force of West Bengal is divided into two jurisdictions; one, the West Bengal and the other is the Kolkata Police.

The main motto and mission of West Bengal Police are to enforce the law and to bring the attitudinal change in common man for greater police public harmony. The department also aims to achieve greater efficiency in the prevention of crime and also detection of crime. The department recruits constables, Sub-inspector of police frequently based on the vacancies.

Eligibility

Eligibility Conditions for Various Posts are listed below

For Constables

The Age of the candidates must not be less than 18 years and not should not be more than 27 years and the Candidates must have passed the Madhyamik Examination conducted by West Bengal Board of Secondary Education or its equivalent.

For West Bengal Sub Inspector

The candidate’s age must not be less than 20 years and should not more than 27 years. Upper age limit is relaxable up to 35 years for departmental candidates of West Bengal Police having necessary qualifications. The minimum educational qualification is a bachelor’s degree from the recognized university.

Application Procedure

Selection Procedure

For constables

The selection process consists of six steps namely

  • (a) Physical Measurements
  • (b) Physical Efficiency/Walking Test
  • (c) Written Examination
  • (d) Interview/Personality test
  • (e) Verification of Antecedents
  • (f) Medical Examination

First, the candidate should have the required criteria of height and other physical standards. Then they need to go through the walking test, then they should attend the written examination. Once the candidates clear the written examination, the interview will be the last step in the selection process. Candidates are selected based on their performance in written exam and interview. The selected candidates should fill their details in the form given by the department. The details of antecedents will be thoroughly checked by the department and the candidates need to undergo a medical examination.

For sub-inspector of police

The selection process of SI consists of four steps namely

  • (a) Preliminary examination
  • (b) Mains examination
  • (c) Interview/Personality test

Exam Pattern

For constables

Physical efficiency test

Male candidates should run a distance of 1600 meters in two minutes and for Female candidates, 400 Meters in two minutes.

Written exam

The written exam carries 90 Marks in and the questions will be multiple choice format. Each question will carry one mark and for every wrong answer one fourth mark will be deducted. The qualifying marks for the exam will be fixed by the West Bengal Police Recruitment Board.

Interview/Viva voceThe candidates qualified in the mains examination will be called for interview. The interview boards assess the attitude, Mental strength, leadership qualities and personality of the candidates for their suitability to the job.The interview/personality test carries 10 marks.For Sub inspector of PoliceFirst, the candidates need to clear the Preliminary Examination which carries 200 marks and the exam will cover General Studies and Arithmetic. All the questions will be of Multiple choice or objective type questions. The question paper consists of 75 questions from general studies carrying 150 marks and 25 questions from arithmetic carrying 50 marks. The duration allotted will be 90 minutes. This exam will be qualifying in nature and the marks obtained in this exam will not be counted in the final merit list.Candidates who qualify in the Preliminary Examination will have to attend the mains or final examination. This Examination will have three papers of conventional type questions that are given below.

Candidates who qualify in the main/final examination have to attend the personality test and it will be for 30 Marks. The Physical Measurement such as Height, Weight and/Chest also will be taken, with the help of Electronic Devices during the test. The board decides the qualifying marks based on the number of vacancies and the number of candidates applied. The final merit list will be prepared based on the aggregate marks obtained in mains exam and personality test.
