The UPSC Civil services IAS exam is conducted in the following three phases:

  • Phase 1: Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination (Objective Type)
  • Phase 2: Civil Services (Mains) Examination (Descriptive Type)

UPSC Civil Services Preliminary Exam Pattern 2020

  • General Studies I: 100 questions for 200 marks (9:30 AM to 11:30 AM)
  • General Studies II (CSAT): 80 questions for 200 marks (2:30 PM to 04:30 PM)
  • UPSC Prelims exam comprises two papers
  • The questions are of multiple-choice objective type
  • Two papers are conducted in a single day
  • The time duration of the exam is 2 hours for each paper
  • There is negative marking for wrong answers i.e, 1/3rd of the allotted mark is deducted for every wrong answer

Union PSC Civil Services Mains Exam Pattern 2020

UPSC Civil Services Mains exam comprises nine descriptive papers

The exam is conducted for five to seven day

  • Paper- A – Compulsory Indian language – 300 marks
  • Paper -B – English – 300 marks
  • Paper- I: Essay Paper – 250 marks
  • Paper-II: General Studies- I – 250 marks
  • Paper- III: General Studies- II – 250 marks
  • Paper- IV: General Studies- III – 250 marks
  • Paper- V: General Studies -IV – 250 marks
  • Paper- VI: Optional Subject Paper- I – 250 marks
  • Paper- VII: Optional Subject Paper- I – 250 marks
  • Questions are of descriptive type
  • The time duration of the exam is three hours for each paper
  • Except for the language papers (Paper A and B), all the papers should be answered in English language
