UPSC Civil Services Exam Eligibility

Candidates who wish to apply for UPSC IAS Exam 2020 have to ensure the eligibility criteria as mentioned below or in UPSC Civil Services Exam Notification 2020. Some of the primary eligibility conditions like nationality, number of attempts, age limit, educational qualification, etc.


For Indian Administrative Services (IAS) and Indian Police Services (IPS) candidate must be a citizen of India

UPSC Civil Services Age Limit

  • Minimum: 21 years
  • Maximum: 32 years

Age relaxation is given for the candidates belonging to the particular category and the relaxations are as follows

  • SC/ST candidates: 5 years
  • OBC candidates: 3 years
  • PWD candidates: 10 years

Educational Qualification

Candidates who have completed Graduation from a recognized university can apply for these posts.

What is the IAS Exam 2020?

Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the exam to recruit the candidates for different posts in All India Services and Central Civil Services in various departments of the Government of India. It was started in 1922. About 1 million candidates applied for the preliminary examination in 2017. The UPSC Civil Services Exam is also known as the IAS Exam. The selection committee officials will test the knowledge and skills of the candidates by conducting the exam on writing, English, General Knowledge and Others, and it is done in three stages:

  • Preliminary Examination is conducted to the candidates to shortlist them and it is only of qualifying nature. The Question Paper is an objective-type paper
  • IAS Mains Examination consists of nine conventional essay type papers and two are optional in them
  • This is the last stage of the selection process. Candidates qualified in the IAS Main Exam will be called for the Personal Interview.

  • Step 1 – Registration

  • Prelims exam comprises of two papers conducted on a single day
  • Questions are of objective type (multiple choice)
  • The duration of the exam for each paper is 2 hours

UPSC Civil Services Mains Exam pattern 2020

UPSC IAS Mains exam consists of a total of nine descriptive papers conducted for 5 to 7 days. Out of the Nine, two papers are of qualifying in nature. There are four general studies papers, one essay paper, and two optional subject papers
