Introduction

Sikkim has been integrated as a part of India in 1975, and it was the last state to join Indian Union. Sikkim has colourful diversity both in human population and in nature. The state it self harbours 11 official languages viz., Gurung, Lepcha, Hindi, Nepali, Sikkimese, Limbu, Newari, Tamang, Magar, Rai, Sunwar, and English. Sikkim shares a boundary with three other countries China’s Tibet Autonomous Region, Nepal, and Bhutan. Hence, there is an absolute necessary for the maintenance of law and order.

Sikkim Police was born on 27 of Nov 1897 with one head constable and five constables. Currently, more than 3500 police personnel are employed in the police department of Sikkim and Sikkim has lowest crime rate in the country. Sikkim Police has to serve the people as guardians of the law and also enforcing the law firmly and fairly without any prejudices. Sikkim police play a major role in the maintenance of peace and harmony in the community.

Positions

Sub Inspector (SI), Constable, Assistance Sub-Inspector (ASI), Driver, GD Constable, Head Constable, Fireman, Home guards, Clerk, are some of the important posts that come under the police department. Constable, follower and Home guard posts are generally notified by the department depending upon the requirement. Eligibility

Age Criteria

The age limit for the post of Constable (Technical and non technical) should be 18 to 22 years and for drivers, the candidate age should be between 20 to 25 years.

Education

Candidates must have passed 10th standard for constable position and for home guards, the candidates must have passed VIII std.

How to Apply

  • First, Candidates should download the application form from the Official website sikkimpolice.nic.in
  • Then the candidates need to fill the form and should post it to the prescribed address in an envelope along with the requisite documents.

Selection Procedure

The selection process consists of four steps that are listed below

  • (a) Physical Measurement
  • (b) Physical Efficiency/Endurance Test (PET)
  • (c) Written Examination
  • (d) Viva-voce

First, the candidate should meet the required criteria of height and weight. Once the candidates clear the physical efficiency test, they will be eligible to attend written examination. Viva-voce/interview will be the last step in the selection process. Candidates are selected based on the overall performance.

(a) 100 Metres Race

There will be only once chance given to the candidates for the participation in the event. The time taken by the candidates will be measured by using a stopwatch.

(b) 1500 Metres Race

(c) High Jump

Candidates are given a maximum of three chances at the qualifying level and are allowed to take one chance at each subsequent levels. Candidates who qualify in less than three attempts will be given one extra attempt in the next level.

(d) Long Jump

(e) Shot-Put

Candidates will be given three chances to throw 16 lb weight of short-put for men and 12 lb for women and if the candidates make a foul, it is also counted as one attempt.

Written Exam

After clearing the physical test successfully, candidates should attend written exam. The questions will be asked from the following segments

  1. Culture of Sikkim Local places and persons of importance
  2. General Knowledge of Sikkim & India
  3. Mathematics of Class VIII level for Constables & Class VI level for Followers.
  4. Essay Writing
  5. Letter Writing

Interview/Viva voce

The candidates will be called for interview, based on their performance in physical test and written examination. The interview board assesses the attitude and personality of the candidates for their suitability to the job.
