Gujarat Civil Services


The Gujarat Public Service Commission was formed in the year 1960 for the proper functioning of the recruitment process to recruit candidates for Gujarat Civil Services. Its main office is located at Ahmadabad. The main function of Gujarat Civil Commission are as follows:

  1. Recruit civil services within the state
  2. Advise the State Government on various topics
  3. Disciplinary matters regarding Government servants
  4. Legal issues related to Government Servants that were filed while executing their duty

Haryana Civil Services, Nagaland Civil Service Exam, WB Civil Service Executive Exam, etc, are also popular state service exams.


The Posts recruited by Gujarat Civil Commission are categorized into two classes:

  1. Class I
  2. Class II

The categorization of the posts are given below

Class I

  1. Deputy Director (Scheduled Caste Welfare), Social Justice.
  2. Chief Industrial Advisor
  3. Additional Chief Town Planner
  4. Senior Town Planner

Class II

  1. Social Welfare Officer
  2. Child Marriage Prevention Officer – District Social Defense Officer, GSS
  3. Assistant Manager
  4. Assistant Director
  5. Scientific Officer (Biology)
  6. Scientific Officer (Physics)
  7. Junior Town Planner
  8. Agriculture Officer
  9. Veterinary Officer

Eligibility Criteria

The Age Limit, Educational Qualification required for Class I & II post including their Pay Scale are listed below.

For Class I

  1. a) Age Limit: 20 – 35 years
  2. b) Educational Qualification – Any Graduate
  3. c) Pay Scale – 15,600-39,100

For Class II

  1. a) Age Limit: 20 – 35 years
  2. b) Educational Qualification – Any Graduate
  3. c) Pay Scale – 93,00-34,800


The Upper age limit will be relaxed for the backward classes, scheduled castes and scheduled tribes as per the government rules.

Application Procedure

Candidates must read detailed notification to apply online. One can download official notification from drona.in website.

Selection procedure

The candidates are selected through three step process of which Prelims exam is just qualifying in nature. Once the candidate qualifies the prelims exam he needs to attend mains exam then after going through it, he/she has to attend interview.

Exam Pattern

Preliminary Examination

The Preliminary Examination is the first stage of the Gujarat Civil Services Examination. This exam is conducted to screen the candidates who can then be shortlisted for the next level, i.e. the Main Examination. It consists of a single question paper which contains multiple choice questions. The questions are asked from the following categories:

  1. Gujarati
  2. English
  3. Reasoning & Quantitative Test
  4. General Studies.

Main Examination

As the name itself suggests, the Main Examination is one of the important parts of the Gujarat Civil Services Examination. This exam consists of 5 papers including various subjects and the questions are in descriptive form. The candidate has to select an optional from the below listed subjects. The questions are asked from the following categories:

  • Paper I: English
  • Paper II: Gujarati
  • Paper III: Optional Subject
  • Paper IV: General Studies Paper 1
  • Paper V: General Studies Paper 2

The interview is the last stage of the screening process. Some of the tips that one needs to keep in mind before going for the interview are:

  • Arrive at the venue at least 20 minutes before the scheduled time
  • Ensure to wear proper and formal dress (girls to put on moderate or no make-up. No jewelry)
  • Greet the panel warmly and confidently
  • Maintain the body language, gestures, and postures appropriately
  • Understand the questions properly
  • Be very confident while answering the questions
  • Pay proper and equal attention towards all the interviewers
