The formation of Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission dates back to the pre-independence era when the British Government had set up a Public Service Commission to study the salary structure in the Indian Civil Service. It comprised of four Englishmen and four Indians. The Commission had set a rate to increase the Membership in Indian Civil Service and Indian Police in the fifteen and twenty-five years respectively. The commission gave authority to Provincial Government to decide on the formation of Public Service Commission. With this mandate, The Madras Service Commission came into existence in the year 1929 under the Act of the Madras Legislature. It attained the privilege of only Indian Province with Public Service Commission.

Post-Independence, after re-organization of States, Madras Service Commission was named as Madras Public Service Commission in the year 1957. In 1970, the name of State was changed to Tamil Nadu; the Commission was renamed as the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC). As per the Constitutional provision, Article 315 to 323, it is mandatory for the States to form a Public Service Commission and allow it function. Further information about TNPSC can be found on Drona website. The other popular PSCs are APPSC, TSPSC, KSPSC, etc.

Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission, conducts recruitment for all the State level positions and other services, below is the list of administrative services through which TNPSC conducts an examination as per the guidelines and select most suitable candidates for the post. The important exams conducted by TNPSC are TNPSC Group I, TNPSC Group II, TNPSC Group III, and TNPSC Group IV.

TNPSC advises the State Government on recruitment procedures and rules to be followed by the indictment of candidates into services. It issues guidelines on promotions, indicting and transfer of officials from one department to other. Based on the recommendation of various departments, Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission releases recruitment notification for different positions. The composition of Tamil Nadu, Public Service Commission, comprises a Chairman and members. The members of the commission can go up to 14 members.
