Tamil Nadu, popularly known as “Land of Tamils” is the southernmost State of India. It shares a maritime boundary with Sri Lanka. It is one of the most literate States in India with a literacy rate of 80.33 percent. According to the Assocham, the state witnessed 100 percent student enrollment in primary and upper primary schools. The education system in the State is robust with 34335 elementary schools, 5167 high schools, and 5054 higher secondary schools. In the state, there are 37 universities, 552 engineering colleges and reputed national level institutes such as IIT Madras, Indian Maritime University, NIT Tiruchirappalli, etc.

The State Government employs over 14 lakh people in various state government departments. Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission plays a significant role in the recruitment of competent personnel into government services. After the re-organization of states in 1956, the Madras Service Commission was changed to the Madras Public Service Commission. In 1969, the state’s name was changed to Tamil Nadu and in 1970 the Commission was renamed as Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission.
