Located in the heart of Himalayas, the State of Jammu and Kashmir comprises three divisions viz. Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh. The artificially created State of Jammu and Kashmir enjoyed the status of being one of the princely States of the united British Indian Empire. A Public Service Recruitment Board, responsible for Statewide government recruitments, came into existence on 31 December 1954. The Board enjoyed the status of being the first formal recruiting agency in the State. With the advent of Jammu and Kashmir Constitution on 26th January 1957, the J&K Public Service Commission (JKPSC) was also established under section 128 of the J&K Constitution on 2 September 1957. The important notification released in the state are Jammu & Kashmir Combined Competitive Examination and JK Police.

JKPSC is responsible for the human resource recruitment process in the State government departments.
