Gujarat with a geographical area of 196,024 km2 is the westernmost state of the country and is referred as the “Jewel of Western India” and “Land of Legends”. It has a large coastline of 1,600 km and most of it lies on the Kathiawar peninsula. Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Arabian Sea and Sindh (Pakistan) border the state. Gujarati nationalists agitated for the separate state to Gujarati speaking people called the Mahagujarat Movement. Meanwhile, Marathi nationalists started Samyukta Maharashtra movement which led to the split of Bombay state into Maharashtra and Gujarat on 1 May 1960. The population of Gujarat State is more than 6.1 crores with a density is 308 km-2 which is lower than many other Indian states. However, the sex ratio is very poor with 918 females for every 1000 males.
