Reclamation by the Cochin Port Trust (CPT) will Damage ecosystem of Vembanad – aPanel

  • Vembanad is the longest lake in India that spans several districts in the state of Kerala.
  • Vembanadis also the largest lake in Kerala.
  • This lake has Several small islands namely Vypin, Vallarpadam, Mulavukad, Willingdon Island,etc.
  • The Kochi Port was built around the Vallarpadam island and the Willingdon Island.
  • This lake is famous, and the Nehru Trophy Boat Race is conducted in this
  • Vembanad was identified as awetland by Government of India under National Wetlands Conservation Programme.
  • This Wetland system is a Ramsarsite, and it is one of the three Ramsar sites in India.
  • This site is the largest Ramsar site in India.
  • In 2011,Vembanadwas classified as Critically Vulnerable Coastal Area by the Coastal Regulation Zone,in its notification.
  • Many allegations were laid on the Cochin Port Trust (CPT) that it reclaimed some stretches of Vembanad backwaters.
  • This will be a violation of the rules and regulations of Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) notification
  • Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, constituted a committee to investigate the problem.
  • The committee has held CPT is responsible for CRZ violations.
  • The committee raised its concern as this reclamation will cause massive damage to the ecosystem of Vembanand.

India’s Solar Power Capacity Increased

  • India’s solar power capacity has been increased by 5,525 MW,and the total of this clean energy source now is 12,288 MW.
  • India is estimated to have 748 GW of solar energy potential.
  • India has said during the meeting of Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC) of United Nations Frame Work Convention on Climate Change that India will achieve the production of 40 per cent of Electric power from non-fossil fuels by 2030.

Venus Look alike Planet was Discovered by Using NASA’s Kepler Telescope

  • Using Kepler space telescope, astronomers have discovered a Venus like planet.
  • It is orbiting around a dim star,and the star is only one-fifth in the diameter of our Sun.
  • The planet is at a distance of 219 light years from Earth.
  • This planet is slightly larger than Earth and encircles low-temperature star Kepler-1649, for every nine days.
