UPSC Combined Geo-Scientist and Geologist Examination

Introduction

Union public service commission recruits eligible candidates to services or posts of Geo-Scientist and Geologist through a competitive exam. UPSC also gives other important recruitment notifications like combined defence services, Economic services, combined medical services,  civil services, engineering services, NDA and Naval academy exams, forest service and Special class railway apprentice (SCRA). 

Positions

The positions recruited through this exam are for central government posts.

Category I- Posts in the Geological Survey of India which comes under Ministry of Mines.

  • (i) Geologist, Group A
  • (ii) Geophysicist, Group A
  • (iii) Chemist. Group A

Category II – Posts in the Central Groundwater Board which comes under Ministry of Water Resources

(i) Junior Hydrogeologists (Scientist B)

Eligibility Criteria

Age

  • For Geologist and Geophysicist and Chemist, candidates must not be older than 32 years and less than 21 years of age.
  • For Jr. Hydrogeologist (Scientist B) candidates must not be older than 35 years and less than 21 years of age.

Education

For Geologists

Master’s degree in Geology or Applied Geology Geological Science or Geo-Exploration or Mineral Exploration or Marine Geology or Earth Science or Engineering Geology and Resource Management or Petroleum Geosciences Petroleum Exploration or Oceanography and Coastal Areas Study or Geological Technology or Geophysical Technology or Geochemistry from recognised University.

(b) For Geophysicists in Geological Survey of India

M.Sc. in Physics or Geophysics or Applied Physics or Applied Geophysics or Marine Geophysics or Applied Geophysics or Integrated M.Sc. in Exploration Geophysics from any recognised university.

(c) For Chemists  in Geological Survey of India

M.Sc. in Chemistry or Applied Chemistry or Analytical Chemistry from any recognised  University.   

For Junior Hydrogeologists (Scientist B) in Central Ground Water Board

(a) Master’s degree in Geology or Hydrogeology or Applied Geology or Marine Geology from any recognised University

For all the posts candidates must be physically and mentally fit as per the Rules mentioned in the notification.

Relaxations

  • The upper age limit will be relaxed to a maximum of five years if the candidates belong to or a Scheduled Tribe a Scheduled Caste.   
  • Three years for Other Backward Classes
  • Up to five years for the candidates who had domiciled in the State of Jammu and Kashmir from the 1st January 1980 to the 31st day of December 1989.
  • For Government servants, the upper age limit will be relaxed up to a maximum of 7 years.
  • Ten years for deafmute and Orthopedically disabled persons.   

Details about rules of relaxations will be notified in the official notification. Drona provides necessary materials like previous question papers, model papers, etc. to crack the exam easily.

How To Apply

  • Candidates need to apply online through the website http://www.upsconline.nic.in
  • Detailed instructions will be given on the website.
  • Candidates need to pay the requisite fee and should submit the application.

Selection Procedure

The Engineering Services Examination has two stages.

  • The written exam, which consists of one qualifying paper of English and three papers from the subject.
  • Interview

Written Examination

The Examination consists of four papers and the first paper questions from English will be asked. This paper is compulsory for all the posts. Remaining papers will be from the concerned subject, and each paper carries 200 marks. For each paper, three hours of time will be given.

Interview/Personality Test

The UPSC board calls or selects candidates for interview based on their performance in the written exam. The interview panel tests the suitability of the candidates to the post and assesses their personality, attitude, etc.
