UPSC Combined Defence Services Examination


RRB and SSC also plays an important role to recruit eligible candidates into various central government positions.

UPSC Combined Defence Services 2016 Notification


UPSC (Union Public Service Commission)  conducts a Combined defence service Examination (CDS) examination twice a year, to select eligible candidates for training in Officers Training Academy, Indian Military Academy, Indian Air Force Academy, and Indian Naval Academy. UPSC also gives notification for combined medical service exams, engineering service exams, civil service exams, combined geo scientist and geologist exams,  NDA and Naval academy exams, Indian Economic service exams, forest service exams and Special class railway apprentice (SCRA). 

Positions and Eligibility Criteria

Academy Course Age Educational qualification
Indian Military Academy 144th (DE) Course

20 to 24 years

Any Degree or equivalent from a recognised University.
Indian Naval Academy Executive (General Service) Engineering degree from recognised university
Air Force Academy (Pre-Flying) Training Course Degree (with Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level) from a recognised University or Bachelor degree in Engineering
Officers’ Training Academy 107th SSC(Men)(NT) Course Any Degree or equivalent from a recognised University.

Physical Standards

  • The minimum height for male candidates is 157.5 cms,  for Navy 157 cms and  162.5  cms for  Air  Force.  
  • For female candidates, minimum height is 152 cms.

Candidates having valid and current Commercial Pilot Licence issued by DGCA (India) will be eligible, and the Upper age limit will be 26 yrs.

  • Detailed procedure for filling the online application will be notified in the official notification.

Selection Procedure

In the Selection process there will be a written examination, and upon qualifying the written examination, candidates need to attend a personality test or intelligence/Psychological Aptitude test. Selection of the candidates will be done based on the overall performance.

For Admission to Indian Air Force Academy, Naval Academy, and Indian Military Academy:

SSB Interview/Personality Test

Candidates will be selected for the interview by the UPSC board, based on the performance in the written exam.
