PSU meaning is Public Sector Undertakings. A state-owned company in India is known as PSU or Public Sector Enterprise. They may be classified as Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) or State Level Public Enterprises (SLPEs). CPSEs are operated by the Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises. In PSUs, the majority of the shares, i.e., 51% or more, are owned by the central or state government.

These are subdivided into following categories based on the net worth and annual turn over. 

  • Maharatna
  • Navratna
  • Miniratna Category I
  • Miniratna Category II

In total, there are 10 (ten) Maharatnas, 14 (fourteen) Navratnas and 73 (seventy-three) Miniratnas. In total, there are nearly 300 CPSEs (Central Public Sector Enterprises). The following companies are India’s largest PSUs which have attained the status of Maharashtra, Navratna and Miniratna.

Maharatna PSU of India

Maharatna is the status given to top PSUs where the companies have the authority to make foreign investments up to Rs 5,000 crores without taking any govt approval. The company should gain an annual net worth of Rs. Fifteen thousand crores, net profit of over Rs. 5,000 crores, and turnover of Rs. Twenty-five thousand crores over the past three successive years to be qualified as Maharatna. At present,  Maharatna status are:

PSU Navratna

Navratna status is given to the companies by the department of public enterprises. The companies have to obtain a score of 60 out of 100 to be qualified as Navratna. This score is based on the following six parameters:

  • PBDIT to turnover
  • Net profit
  • Profit Before Depreciation, Interest and Taxes (PBDIT) to capital employed
  • EPS (Earning per Share) and inter-sectoral performance

What is the Eligibility for PSU Exam?

Eligibility criteria for PSU should have a valid GATE score in the relevant discipline is mandatory to apply. Along with it, the following factors are also considered:

  • Age limit
  • Minimum pass percentage or CGPA obtained in Bachelor’s degree
  • Medical standards, etc

Nationality

  • Candidates must be the citizens of India

Selection Process for PSU Recruitment 2020

All PSUs recruit the candidates in the following three ways:

  • By conducting written test
  • Through GATE score
  • By enlisting the candidates from the premier institutes in the country

GATE exam will be conducted in 24 subjects or papers. This score is used by PSUs to provide the admissions into various post-graduation programs in IISc, IITs, NITs, IIITs, and various institutes. PSUs will shortlist the candidates based on the GATE score followed by GD and interview
